1.2 General description of research

The Logic Systems Laboratory conducts research along two primary axes: bio-inspired systems and reconfigurable systems. The first line of research aims at developing novel bio-inspired computing machines, as well as new computational methodologies based on ideas inspired by nature. Such systems are endowed with capabilities usually associated with living beings, such as: adaptation, evolution, growth, healing, replication, and learning.

The second research axis involves the design of novel reconfigurable systems, based on high-complexity programmable digital circuits (such as field-programmable gate arrays, or FPGAs). Such systems can be rendered architecturally optimal for a given task, as well as dynamically adapt to changing environments or incomplete specifications (with applications in fields such as autonomous robotics, neural networks, and more).
